Curiosities

We've all heard plenty about people who are famous for playing trombone. But what about famous people who play trombone?
Finally, we present an attempt to gather them all in one place. Additions welcome. They must be more famous for doing something else than for playing trombone.

Jonathan Frakes

"Frakes likes to talk about trombone playing, something he has done since he marched with the band at Penn State University. He played it on Star Trek: The Next Generation, but was often dubbed by someone else onscreen. 'When Riker played badly, it was me, but when he was playing well, it was Bill Watrous,' confesses Frakes."

Conrad Janis
TV vet played Mindy's dad Fred McConnell in Mork and Mindy; arguably doesn't belong on this list because his fame as a player almost eclipses his acting career.

Dirk Benedict
"Face" from A-team and "Starbuck" from Battlestar Gallactica also plays dixie trombone and piano in his own band.

Harpo Marx

Groucho Marx

Jason Biggs

Mistaken for Petey the trombone virtuoso in American Pie 2

Todd Field
Director of "In the Bedroom", protege of Kubrick, Nick the piano player in "Eyes Wide Shut", use to be a pro jazz trombone player in Seattle

Paul Newman
Learned to play trombone for a role in Paris Blues, but the parts were really played by Juan Tizol (why they didn't get a slide guy is beyond me).

Ward Kimball
Creator of Jiminy Cricket and other Disney animated characters, also played dixie trombone

Tom Wopat
Former Dukes of Hazzard star has been known to sit in on trombone with the pit band of 42nd Street during closing music.

Jean Chrétien, Prime Minister of Canada from 1993-2003, plays valve trombone.

Nelly Furtado apparently played in high school
Not quite as hot as the prime minister of Canada

His majesty king Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand plays many instruments, including the trombone, and is a Dixie fan. (why is it always dixie?)

Cyndi Lauper
Probably doesn't play, but still...

Brian Keith
